"This is our sixth or seventh collaboration. In the past, we've worked with Dry Hop, Radium City, Oswego Brewing Co, and Radical Effect," said Mike Billy, head brewer and operations manager at Tangled Roots. "We've made a lot of IPAs and hoppier beers in our other collaborations. So going into this project with Alter, we knew we wanted to try something a little different."
Merging the sensibilities of both breweries, Tangled Roots and Alter Brewing Company decided to craft a traditional English-style Barley Wine. This type of high alcohol, malt-forward ale is no stranger to the TR taproom, the brewery has put out two similar Barley Wines in the past. Most recently, a limited-run Blonde Barley Wine in early 2019 which earned glowing reviews on UnTapped.
"It can be challenging to make these traditional high gravity beers on modern systems, it's a really hands on process," said Billy. "The guys from Alter had never seen a tank get so high, which led to the beer's name 'High and Tight'. Like the haircut style."
