Now through August 23rd, visitors from across the state will once again converge on Ottawa’s historic downtown to hear the words of Abraham Lincoln and his senate rival Stephen A. Douglas. The city’s picturesque Washington Square Park, which hosted scores of debate attendees 168 years ago, will now serve as a hub for two weeks of fun family-friendly festivities and historic celebrations during the inaugural Debate Days.
This event coincides with America’s 250th anniversary, making 2026 an especially meaningful year to reflect on the nation’s history and seminal events, like the Lincoln-Douglas debate, that still shape our contemporary lives.
Debate Days will celebrate 250 years of American independence with fun and engaging historic reenactments, guided tours, live entertainment, kids activities, local food, and boutique shopping - all taking place near the site of Ottawa’s contribution to the American story.
Held on August 21, 1858, the first of seven now legendary Lincoln-Douglas debates took place at Washington Square Park. This pivotal exchange between Abraham Lincoln and Stephen A. Douglas helped shape the national conversation on slavery, leadership, and the future of a nation on the precipice of civil war.

During these two weeks of festivities, visitors can immerse themselves in that history through debate reenactments, guided tours of the Reddick Mansion that overlooked the famed debate site, by exploring authentic debate artifacts and exhibits at the Ottawa Historical and Scouting Heritage Museum, and through downtown historic walking tours that bring the city’s rich past to life.
Debate Days is a celebration of Lincoln’s legacy and his connection to the region, but it’s also a chance to experience what makes contemporary Ottawa such a remarkable city. Throughout the week, visitors can experience America’s 250 parade - featuring an appearance by a 35ft inflatable Lincoln balloon, sample local cuisine and cast your votes during The Great Taste Debate competition, participate in the Grand Illinois Trail Bike Ride, enjoy live music and entertainment throughout downtown, browse unique local shops, and let the kids enjoy games, an old-fashioned ice cream social, and a community-wide scavenger hunt.
If you’re a lifelong history enthusiast or just discovering the charms of Ottawa for the first time, Debate Days offers something for every generation while showcasing the charm, hospitality, and heritage that makes the city a destination worth exploring.
