Derek Barichello has worked at The Times for 14 years, nine of those as news editor. He became part of the NewsTribune staff in 2019 when the newspaper became part of Shaw Media. Barichello also has worked for The Albany Herald in Albany, Georgia; The News-Gazette in Champaign; and Sauk Valley Media in Sterling. He started as a sports reporter, moving to newsrooms in 2008. He covered the aftermath of the Rita Crundwell while working as a beat reporter in Dixon. His No. 1 goal as news editor is to provide information that is timely and empowers readers to be informed members of their local communities. He grew up in Streator, graduated Streator High School and then the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with a degree in journalism. He married Julie and lives in Streator.
